Stars - In Our Bedroom After The War

Stars released their upcoming album In Our Bedroom After The War digitally through iTunes a few weeks ago. The album itself won't officially be released on CD until September, but they figured since the album would be leaked anyways, they'd rather allow their fans to purchase the album legally online first. What an unexpected surprise!

If you don't know Stars, they are an indie Canadian band that manages to craft the most beautiful pop songs out of usually very depressing subjects mixed with love, lust, fears, death, heart breaks, angst, and hope.

So, I've been absorbing myself into every second, riff, beat, and lyric of this album since purchasing it a week ago. The opening three tracks are classic Stars. Starting off with the pulsating down-tempo electronic instrumental The Beginning After The End, it prepares you for the next fifty three minutes of musical soul searching.

The second track, The Night Starts Here, is where the album really begins. This song calls you. It calls you to forget your fears, take action, make the first move, and want more from everything in life. The line: "The night starts here. The night starts here. Forget your name. Forget your fear." is the center of this song as its message is rhythmically repeated over and over as the main chorus. It's as if the artists are trying to imprint this one message into your brain as the last impression you'll ever have of this album if you only listen to it once. To forget everything you've ever known. To forget your name and your past. No matter what you've done. Remember, "The night starts here."

The next track, Take Me To The Riot is another soon to be classic Stars song that only they can deliver so well thanks to Torquil Campbell and Amy Millan's soft yet upbeat harmonies. And check out the lyrics:

"You sprung me, I’m grateful. I love when you tell me not to speak. I owe you, but I know you. You’ll have me back but it’s gonna take a week .... Let’s do that, just feed me. I hate when I have to get to sleep. You despise me and I love you. It’s not much but it’s just enough to keep."

The other track that stands out for me is the song Personal. In Stars fashion, they manage to craft an entire song based on a personal ad. "wanted: single f. under 33. must enjoy the sun. must enjoy the sea. sought by single m. mrs destiny. send photo to address. is it you and me?" It's one of the most beautiful and depressing songs you'll hear all year.

So I could go on and on with the rest of the songs from this album, but I don't think I have the time. Is it better than their last album Set Yourself On Fire? Well, no but only because that album is probably one of my favorite albums of all time. But I'm still grateful Stars are still producing the most eloquent, beautiful, and depressing indie pop songs ever. And I can't wait to see them in Los Angeles at the Orpheum Theatre this November!

Oh, here's their video of Your Ex-Lover Is Dead from their 2005 album Set Yourself On Fire:

Stars - Your Ex-Lover Is Dead
God, that was strange to see you again
Introduced by a friend of a friend
Smiled and said, "Yes, I think we've met before"
In that instant it started to pour

Captured a taxi despite all the rain
We drove in silence across Pont Champlain
And all of that time you thought I was sad
I was trying to remember your name

This scar is a fleck on my porcelain skin
You tried to reach deep but you never got in
And now you're outside me, you see all the beauty
Repent all your sin

Nothing but time and a face that you'll lose
I chose to feel it and you couldn't choose
I'll write you a postcard, I'll send you the news
From the house down the road from real love

Live through this and you won't look back
Live through this and you won't look back
Live through this and you won't look back

There's one thing I have to say so I'll be brave
You were what I wanted
I gave what I gave
I'm not sorry I met you
I'm not sorry it's over
I'm not sorry there's nothing to save
I'm not sorry there's nothing to save
