I HEART IDA MARIA

Well, it looks like I already know what my favorite album and artist will be for 2009. It's fuckin' Norwegian rock sensation Ida Maria. I really haven't felt so strong about a female singer since maybe Kate Nash last year. In fact, I like to think Ida is kinda like a rawer, sexier, alcoholic version of Nash. I think I'm in love.

Queen of the World

Whisky please, I need some Whisky please
So bring me conciosness
And kill my innocence
Please lay your eyes on me
Lead me in the dance
Give me no chance to reconsider, reconsider

I'm Queen of the world
I bump into things
I spin around in circles
And I'm singing, and I'm singing I'm singing
Why can't I stay like this?
Dear God.
Oh let me be young
Let me stay, please
Oh let me stay like this ohhhh

Bring me home
I've got no plans for tomorrow
I've got no plans for tomorrow
I got no plans insight
In fact I'm free this week
I'm free this month
I lonely, lonely this year
I'm lonely forever
But today, oh

I'm Queen of the world
I bump into things
I spin around in circles
And I'm singing, and I'm singing I'm singing
Why can't I stay like this?
Dear God.
Oh let me be young
Let me stay, please
Oh let me stay like this ohhhh

And I'm singing, I'm singing I'm singing

I'm Queen of the world
I bump into things
I spin around in circles
And I'm singing, and I'm singing I'm singing
Why can't I stay like this?
Dear God.
Let me be young
Let me stay, please
Oh let me stay like this ohhhh

st vincent - these days

I've been out walking
I don't do too much talking these days
These days...
These days I simply think a lot
About the things that I forgot to do
And all the times I had the chance to

I've stopped my rambling
I don't do too much gambling these days
These days...
These days I simply think about
How all the changes came about my way
And I wonder if I'll live to see another highway

I had a lover
I don't think I'll risk another these days
These days...
These days and if I seem to be afraid
To live the life that I have made in song
It's just that I've been losing so long

La la la la la

I've stopped my dreaming
I won't do too much scheming these days
These days...
These days I sit on cornerstones
And count the time in quartertones to ten
Please don't confront me with my failures
I have not forgotten them

rilo kiley b-side

i love rilo kiley b-sides. here's the track off of the moneymaker single called Draggin' Around.

Draggin Around (Non-Album Track) - Rilo Kiley

Here's to all the luck that pours down on me
Here's to all the melodies that picked us up off our seats
Here's to the younger ones when they replace me
Here's to the bitterness that keeps the sweet so sweet

Here's to all the words that we'll never speak
Here's to all the pretty girls that you're going to meet
Here's to the little lies I tell in my sleep
Here's to the secrets that you're going to keep

Why don't you raise up, raise up your cup?
I've had enough, raise up your cups

Here's to the company that we used to keep
Here's to the certainty of sickness and sleep
Here's to the death of who we thought we were
Here's to all our kids that'll never be born

Why don't you raise up, raise up your cup?
I'm choking up, raise up your cups
To dragging around
A cross and a thorny crown
And living because you're willing
And being forgiven, thankfully

i'm sure we've all been perplexed by lost loves and lives we could have lived. just makes you ponder at the frivolousness of it all. so why don't you raise up your cup to draggin around?

i love metric - gimme sympathy

hmmm, i think i already wrote about how i love metric a couple years ago. well, just a quick update. i still do and this song is amazing.

"Don't go
Stay with the all unknown
Stay away from the hooks
All the chances we took

We're so close to something better left unknown
We're so close to something better left unknown

I can feel it in my bones
Gimme sympathy
After all this is gone
Who would you rather be
The Beatles or The Rolling Stones?
Oh seriously
You're gonna make mistakes you're young
Come on baby play me something,
Like here comes the sun "

Hold Tight London

Ever fall in love with a really hot song at first listen without ever paying attention to its lyrics? And only years later you actually stop and pay attention to what it was saying? And then you realize how damn beautiful that song was on the inside. And how stupid you feel when you realize how much you missed out? Really?? Have you???

That's how I feel about this song.

So why do I warn you?
I see things when I hold you
But I've whispered, "It's alright."
It was you and me and a long night.

You're a ghost in the doorway
I can see through and I hold tight
Understand holding until it hurts
I just want you here and you're lovely

You're a ghost in the doorway
I can see through and I hold tight
Understand holding until it hurts
I just want you here and you're lovely

Don't worry, nothing can go wrong
Don't worry, nothing can go wrong
Don't worry, nothing can go wrong
Don't worry, nothing can go wrong

I Feel Like A Teenager Again

someone once told me i had good genes. whatever.

I don't care if it hurts
I want to have control
I want a perfect body
I want a perfect soul
I want you to notice
When I'm not around
You're so fucking special
I wish I was special

But I'm a creep
I'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doing here?
I don't belong here

She's running out the door
She's running out
She's run, run, run, running out

Whatever makes you happy
Whatever you want
You're so fucking special
I wish I was special

Techno Chicken

it's techno chicken!

Things to work on

Hi Darren, this is your inner self. Here are some things to work on:

  • Be honest
  • Tell exactly how you feel to others
  • Don't give a shit
  • You've got nothing to lose
Yes, it's an every day struggle. I just need to remind myself every once in a while. (People are still full of shit though)

So What am I Listening to Now?

Moving Units. Wow. It's all I've been able to listen to the past few weeks. I always liked their last album Hexes For Exes, but after paying more attention to the beats and lyrics, it's got to be one of my favorite albums ever.

Every song is just fucking brilliant, but one song that stands out for me is Kids From Orange County. I spent part of my youth growing up in Orange County so the lyrics are spot on describing the desperate situation a lot of these kids feel when growing up there.

Then there's this awesome bridge in the song that goes something like:

And everybody loves a roller coaster ride
Everybody loves a little suicide
And everybody loves a roller coasterride
Everybody needs a little place to hide
Everybody loves a roller coaster ride
Everybody yeah, everybody

The song becomes utterly euphoric when it reaches that part.

Anyways, thought I'd post the rest of the lyrics cuz the song is just perfect:

A suburban scene you can smell the gasoline
You can see the moon is a veil dripping blood on the SUV's
All the kids are leaving now while the curtain is dreaming
How will their parents know where they go when they hide behind gated communities

Now it's four on the floor
Check your head at the door
You've been here before but you wanted some more
And the kids from L.A. say "Hey, hey"
La la la
La la la
La la la
Everyone's going L.A.

A suburban tease you can see their dirty knees
You can see them bounce off a wall like a racquet hits a ball
But they always come back again
A Jamaican breeze you can smell the anti-freeze
You can see the world is a maze when you're young and you're free
To be anything you wanted to be

Now it's four on the floor
Check your head at the door
You've been here before but you wanted some more
And the kids from L.A. say "Hey, hey"
La la la
La la la
La la la
Everyone's going L.A.

And everybody loves a roller coaster ride
Everybody loves a little suicide
Everybody loves a roller coaster ride
Everybody yeah, everybody
And everybody loves a roller coaster ride
Everybody needs a little place to hide
Everybody loves a roller coaster ride
Everybody yeah, everybody

Now it's four on the floor
Check your head at the door
You've been here before but you wanted some more
Alone in the dark you pop like a spark
There's sex in the air but there's love in their heart
There's shadows on the wall
Secrets in the hall
Checking the phone to see who's called
And the kids from L.A. say "Hey, hey"
La la la
La la la
La la la

Everything is going our way
Hey, hey yeah everyone's going L.A.

Get outta the way boy get outta the way
Get outta the way girl get outta the way
Get outta the way boy get outta the way
Get outta the way girl get we're going L.A.

It's a Shoreline

You know. Life seems like it's on repeat sometimes. One day you wake up and decide to change. You try to be a good and decent person and treat people well and do the right thing. You meet like-minded people and suddenly your faith in humanity is restored. You feel good about people again and life is great. Hey, people aren't so bad after all? Maybe it was just my attitude that needed adjusting?

And then these people you get to know, well they don't exactly live up to who you thought they were. And suddenly you realize they are just full of shit. Now what do you do? Push rewind and start over? Or just fuck it and be a bitter person again?

Right now I'm listening to Broken Social Scene - 7/4 (Shoreline). What an amazingly uplifting song. Just listening to the opening riffs has a calming affect on me and makes me smile. It's like feeling a cool breeze on my face while driving down the pacific coast highway. If people can make music this beautiful, maybe there's hope?

It's a shoreline.

This is the type of song of song to listen to with your eyes closed, headphones on, and on repeat.

I never paid attention to the lyrics before, but now that I've read them clearly, this song is even more amazing.

It's a shoreline
And it's half speed
It's a cruel world and
And it's time

And you're walking away
But where to go to?
And you're walking alone,
But how to get through?
If you wanna get it right
You can own what you choose
But you wanna live a lie
And love what you lose

It's a shoreline
And it's half speed
It's a cruel world and
It's time

While you're walking away
And I'm trying to get through
But you've gotta know their lies
From the lies they've told you
If you try to do it up
It all will leave you
If you try to steal the beat
The beat will steal you

It's coming
It's coming in hard
It's coming
It's coming in hard
It's coming
It's coming in hard
It's coming
It's coming in hard
it's coming
It's coming in hard
It's coming
It's coming in hard
It's coming
It's coming in hard
It's coming
It's coming in-

It's a shoreline
And it's halfspeed
It's a cruel world
And it's time

It's coming
It's coming in hard

I feel good again.

I'm Gonna Blog More

I decided I'm going to blog more. Yep that's it. Blogging is a lot of fun because you can write anything on your mind and you know noboby's probably reading it anyways. So who cares if you say something stupid or write nonsense!

Take this blog post for example. There's no point in this. But that's the point. IT DOESN'T MATTER!

I need a beer.

Listening Party! Track by Track: YSP!WSD!

It's a party at my place!! No not really, I'm just listening to "You Say Party! We Say Die!" But it sure feels like a party in here.

Here's are my thoughts as I write them down while listening to each track from their album LOSE ALL TIME (with maybe a beer or two) .

1. Five Year Plan
Woah, if the first 30 seconds of this song doesn't hook you into loving it, there is no hope for you. In fact, stop reading this and go back listening to whatever crap you've been listening to.

"the chemicals in our bodies...."
"will you take my place for a while?"

Will you please take her place for a while? Will ya?! Cmon! Nobody will notice!

2. Downtown Mayors Goodnight, Alley Kids Rule!

I love the way she says "all is stirrrl... shhhh!". I have no idea where she got that lovely accent to roll her L's like that. Can someone explain?

3. Opportunity

"COME IN CLOSER!!"

Not sure what this song is trying to say...

But I love the pace... awesome guitar too.

4. Teenage Hit Wonder

Ok I get it... you just want to be friends! Yeah yeah?

The way she sings "You said" is difficult to get out of my head. I can't help singing along in her ridiculous pitch. It's 12:19am, and my neighbors probably think I've gone bonkers.

5. Monster

Wow.... It's so different than their other songs, but it's just so fucking nice. The song just gets better as it nears the end. Perfect.

One of my favorite videos.

Woah she's hot too!

6. Like I Give A Care

THIS IS THE BEST FUCKING SONG ON THE ALBUM. I can see myself going completely nuts with this song at one of their live shows (I have to wait 'till 2011). I might want to fly out to Canada just for this song.

"SHUT OUT THE WORLD SHUT IT SHUT IT OUT!!"

7. Poison

Just when you think it couldn't get better, we get this. We are at the peak and reached the maximum velocity of this roller coaster ride.

I think I understand the concept of this album now. It's all about paranoia and the irrational fear of being caved in by unseen walls.

8. Moon

Alright.... it's not over yet.

Holy crap. I am going to shout out these lines for the rest of my life:

"IT WAS FOR THE SUN IT WAS FOR THE SUN!!!!!!!!"
Fuckin' A it was!

9. Giant Hands

Love the visuals in my head when listening to this. For some reason it reminds me of the Seinfeld "man hands" episode.

I can't believe how many ridiculously catchy and memorable phrases there are in this album. For example, in this song you got...

"LIIIIIIIIIIEEEES"

and

"My giant hands..."

forever implanted in my inner ear.

P.S. Sorry for all the caps. There is no other way to convey her voice and lyrics.

10. You're Almost There

Damn... it's almost over! I can see the finish line.
11. Dancefloor Destroyer
Good fucking lord. Looking at the track title, you'd think this song would be the baddest beat infused dance song of the year. But it's not! Instead it's FUCKING GENIUS. It's exactly what it says it is ... a song about her mother. Correction... her "muuuuthherhrrrrrr".
This is fucking beautiful and brilliant.

12. Quiet World

Wise words: "Don't say goodbye, say good journey"

This album isn't just pure sugary ear candy. It's full of good advice with vitamins and shit for your soul.

Hmmm... I don't think I can sleep. Well fuck, this track is 22 minutes long. I guess they added 18 minutes of noise and silence so you could pass out easier after a night of partying (or drinking alone in your apartment).

Ok. Time for bed. Bye.... I mean Good Journey to you all!
